Cord - made in Germany

The origin of corduroy fabric can be traced back to ancient Egypt, where an early form of the material was known as fustian. Fustian was a coarse, durable fabric made from cotton or a cotton-linen mix that became popular in Europe during the Middle Ages. However, the modern form of corduroy as we know it developed in England during the 18th century.

The name "corduroy" comes from the English word "cord," referring to the parallel, ribbed lines that are the fabric's defining feature. In England, corduroy was mainly produced in and around Manchester, which is why it is sometimes referred to as "Manchester" fabric. Originally, corduroy was used as a robust work fabric, especially in the clothing of the working class, such as for hunting, riding, and workwear, as it is both durable and warm.

In the 19th and 20th centuries, corduroy made its way into fashion and became a popular fabric for trousers, jackets, and shirts in many countries.

Due to the robust nature and its close relation to workwear we have constantly items made from cord in our collection. Our most popular cord quality is our light brass cord. Made of organic cotton and woven by the traditional German mill Kindermann we have several articles that go very well together.
