1923 Turtle Neck black
The turtleneck sweater has a long history that dates back to the 19th century. Originally designed as practical workwear, the turtleneck became popular in England and the USA during the 19th century, especially among sailors who needed protection from the cold. The high collar, which was often folded or rolled, served as additional insulation.
In the 20th century, the turtleneck sweater experienced a fashion breakthrough. In the 1920s, athletes and artists wore it as part of an elegant yet practical look. Particularly in the 1960s, when it was worn by prominent figures like Steve McQueen and Audrey Hepburn, the turtleneck became a symbol of stylish simplicity. Today, it is a versatile garment that can be worn in both formal and informal contexts.
Our 1923 Turtle Necks are inspired by the sailor sweaters of the 1920s. They feature a close-fitting cut, a high turtleneck, and are knitted thick. Our yarn is sourced from the Italian spinning mill Tollegno, and it is RWS certified. This represents the highest standard in yarn spinning.
